Iffley, Oxford

Iffley is a self-contained, peaceful village located within the boundaries of the city of Oxford, on the River Thames about 3kms south-east of the city centre. As the suburbs of Oxford extended in this direction, Iffley preserved its village character and remains an oasis of charm and tranquillity, one of Oxford’s most desirable residential areas. Iffley is a typical English village with pretty cottages, many beautiful gardens, stone walls and narrow winding roads. The 12th century church is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in the country. The church also has a much-admired stained glass window by modern artist, John Piper. There is an excellent pub, a restaurant, and a village shop selling essentials in the village itself. Busy Iffley Road with a selection of shops and frequent buses to the city centre is only a few minutes’ walk away. The village is on a beautiful stretch of the River Thames and in the summer there are regular boat trips from Iffley Lock to Folly Bridge in the centre of Oxford. It is possible to walk or cycle into the city along the towpath, past water meadows, and Oxford college sports grounds and boathouses. The popular Oxford University boat races take place on the river between Iffley and Oxford, starting outside the Isis Tavern pub just a few minutes’ from Iffley Lock.
