Oxford is deservedly famous for its history, its ancient university and its architectural beauty. It is also a modern city with an outstanding range of cultural activities and entertainment, and, not least, a thriving academic and business centre.
The city centre contains most of the city’s oldest buildings and many historical attractions, as well as the main shopping and entertainment centres. To the surprise of many visitors, the university is not located in one place: because of its historical development the various colleges and departments are spread over a large area, mainly in central and north Oxford. The many science and business parks lie outside the city, generally to the south.
