South Oxford describes the area which runs south from the city centre for about 2.5kms along the main Abingdon Road. It offers very convenient access to the city centre as everywhere is within walking distance or a short bus ride. The first section, nearer the city centre, is known as Grandpont, and the further section is known as New Hinksey. This is an increasingly fashionable part of town with many Victorian terraced houses in Grandpont, and 1930s houses in New Hinksey. The Abingdon Road runs parallel to the River Thames, with lovely views of the college sports grounds and boathouses all along one side and delightful riverside walks. One of South Oxford’s most popular features is Hinksey Park, which has an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and a lake. South Oxford is popular with younger professionals and students. It has no shopping centre, but plenty of essential shops such as small supermarkets, newsagents and a chemist, and a number of pubs.
The area has excellent transport links with very frequent buses to the city centre. It adjoins the Oxford Ring Road and the A34, with easy access to the M40. This is the best location for access to South Oxfordshire’s business and science parks, such as the Oxford Science Park, Milton Park, Culham Science Park, Abingdon, Didcot and Harwell.
