Picnic by the river in Oxford

If you're staying in one of our central Oxford short lets, we recommend a picnic on the canal bank in Christ Church meadow. Christ Church, one of the largest of Oxford’s colleges, is considered by many to be the most beautiful. At one end of the meadow, at St Aldates, can be found Alice’s Shop, notable for its inclusion in Carrols Wonderland Adventures. At the other end, the famous Botanic Gardens, said to be the oldest in Britain and open throughout the year.

It’s difficult to believe you’re in the centre of the city when standing in the large area of tranquil pasture surrounding the college, amidst the herd of beautiful Longhorn cattle maintained by the college. The areas surrounding the meadow are open to the public with the gates closing each day at dusk. The rivers Cherwell and Isis border the meadow and offer the perfect setting for relaxing with friends over a picnic while watching novice punters bump along or experienced rowers gliding through the water. For those who wish to get involved, a punt or a pedalo can be rented from the Magdalen Bridge Boat House, costing around £20 an hour.

Following a stroll around the grounds and a picnic on the river bank, The Head of the River pub, located under Folly Bridge, is the best setting for a lunch or dinner. The picturesque beer garden, overlooking the river, is a popular hotspot for those wishing to try local ales, not to mention the famous ‘Head of the River’ burger or the tasty London Pride short crust pie with seasonal vegetables.

Each of the central Oxford Weekly Home properties are within walking distance of Christ Church and we highly recommend a visit during your stay in oxford-a lovely way to spend the afternoon, particularly on a warm, sunny day at the end of a long week!
